Walking in Toronto

DS Maolalai
I loved all the crossroads
which barged through
toronto. the cutting
past neighbourhoods –
main streets and small off-
street roads. loved bars,
little bookshops,
sunlight and girls
in their sunglass and shadow-
thin dresses. the tracks
and the wire of streetcars
which ran up spadina
toward bloor. loved crossing
the roads; loved pausing,
deciding at corners.
needing to go nowhere –
deciding on whims
where to go. little portugal,
koreatown, chinatown, bloor st.
like pouring a handful
of skittles on the table.
deciding on blue, upon red.
DS Maolalai has been nominated nine times for Best of the Net and five times for the Pushcart Prize. His poetry has been released in two collections, "Love is Breaking Plates in the Garden" (Encircle Press, 2016) and "Sad Havoc Among the Birds" (Turas Press, 2019).
