will i be dirt

UMA ARENGO
will i be dirt-
bound yet free,

                        shapely
                              and shivering
   in the human
   fruit,

                              peeling
                              away my fibers
in freeing strides,

                                 scratching the shell
                                 of freedom;

            will i be sweet-
    smelling,
              fruit-

                                like and fruitful
    in my human core,
           blooming in freeing
           strides;

                   will i fall
      to dust,
rotting
and wrinkling on
earth,

                                 peeling away
                                 at sour  flesh,
cracking
             the shell
of freedom
                       (be dirt-
                       bound and free);

               will i be fruit-
like to the core:
                       soft,      tender,

                                                   raw and real?
